The Estate & Local Area
The Immediate Surroundings
The property is close to Mougins (20 minutes), Valbonne (10 minutes) and Grasse (20 minutes). Mougins is a village full of art galleries and restaurants, “clothed in flowers and bushes” according to the Michelin guide. Picasso lived here from 1961 until his death in 1973. Valbonne is a picturesque village with a wonderful food and clothes market on Fridays. Or you can soak up the sun with a coffee or a glass of wine in the spacious Café des Arcades, famous for its role in ‘French Kiss’, with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline. Its buildings and arcades date back to 1519 in the reign of the Renaissance king, Francois 1, the great rival of Henry V111. Grasse, the largest city nearby, is the home of the perfume industry, and has a beautiful old quarter. Grasse has attracted many famous individuals such as Pauline, Napoleon’s outrageous sister, and the far less outrageous Queen Victoria, both of whom spent quite some time here. It was the birthplace of Fragonard who managed to combine eroticism and landscape painting in the eighteenth century, before the Revolution arrived and disapproved. Cannes and Nice are both accessible within 30 minutes – depending of course on traffic. You must allow longer in the height of summer. Cannes has the Croisette, the long beach, stylish shops and the annual film festival and many other events. Nice is a university city and has the best collections of Matisse (Musée Matisse) and Chagall (Musée Marc-Chagall) anywhere in the world. And of course the Promenade des Anglais, created by the British aristocracy in the early 19th century. There are a number of hill-top villages nearby such as Opio, Chateauneuf, and the fortified medieval village of St Paul de Vence (with the modern art collection of the Foundation Maeght and the Colombe D’Or restaurant where you will be able to dine under paintings by Picasso, Matisse, Miró, Braque and others who paid for their board and lodging by painting). There are many golf courses nearby such as The Royal Mougins, Opio-Valbonne, and Opio. The nearest, Opio, is just five minutes away from the house. Also, within five or ten minutes is the Vignal Tennis Club and for those who like horse-riding, Le Ranch, or a little further away at Lac de Saint-Cassien. There you can swim, go for a ride around the lake or even have a Polo lesson. There is also boating on the lake.
There is the whole of the Cote d’Azur to explore, from Monaco, with its well-dressed high society, to St Tropez, with its notoriously less dressed high society. For those with an interest in art, food, beach culture or just relaxing, the area is simply unbeatable. Italy and its wonderful restaurants and markets is an hour’s drive away, and makes a very pleasant day trip.
